[ Rose City Rollers - Portland Junior Roller Derby - Rose Buds ]

The Rose Buds (Junior Roller Derby)
On May 4th Portland’s next generation of derby girls, The Rose Buds, began their training at the Hangar at Oaks Park.

Like many cities in the nation, Portland, with its rich Roller Derby culture, is ripe for a junior derby team and the Rose City Rollers (RCR) are proud to bring their beloved sport to girls aged 14-18.

The goal is to build strength, confidence and camaraderie through participation in a non-traditional women’s team sport.

The Rose Buds will play a modified version of the derby Portlanders love, learned at weekly practices led by some of RCR’s most well-known skaters and coaches.

Skaters will create their personal roller derby character, choosing a derby name, creating uniforms/costumes and registering their name on the Junior Flat Track Derby Association website.

By late summer the Rose Buds will begin playing exhibition matches against other Junior Flat Track Derby Association teams.

Cassedy Sullivan, Americorps Volunteer, will assist the Rose City Roller in administration of the Rose Buds.

Practices:
Practices will be held from 3-5 PM on Sundays beginning May 4th at the Rose City Rollers’ hanger at Oaks Park (7805 SE Oaks Park Way in Portland).

The practices will consist of skating drills designed to build endurance, agility, form and speed.

Once skating technique is established, the girls will learn the modified Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) rules and begin to learn the strategies and teamwork to derby.

REQUIREMENTS:
• USA Roller Sports (USARS) insurance for each skater costing $45/year
• Safety gear: helmet, mouth guard, knee, elbow, wrist pads*
• Skates*
• $20/month dues for the use of facilities and resources
• Transportation to the practices
• Potential cost of travel if Rose Buds are invited to other cities (Seattle or Tacoma for example)

*Limited scholarships may be available to skaters demonstrating financial need and RCR will donate used gear.
