This event will feature opportunities for learning about and joining the NICWA mission, with a “call to action table” hosted by the non-profit.
Every day, Native families in crisis reach out to NICWA (National Indian Child Welfare Association) for help navigating the Indian child welfare system.
- NICWA is headquartered in Multnomah County where Native children make up 1.5% of the population yet represent 7.6% of children receiving child welfare services. Native children are overrepresented in the Multnomah County welfare system by 690%; nearly double Oregon’s state-wide average of 350% overrepresentation, the ninth highest rate in the country.
- NICWA helps social service programs and their staff decrease these numbers by supporting families and communities in accessing services to keep Native children safely in their homes and connected to their culture.
