Roller Derby Rules

Roller Derby Basics
Roller derby is a fast-paced, contact team sport that combines speed, strategy, and athleticism. It might look chaotic, but there’s a method to the madness! Follow the jammer, enjoy the hits and spills, and cheer for your favorite team.

1. Game Format:

  • Two 30-minute periods, divided into plays called jams.
  • The team with the most points at the end wins.

2. Skater Roles:

  • Jammers: Wear a star helmet cover and score points by passing opposing players.
  • Blockers: Play offense and defense, helping their jammer while stopping the opposing jammer.
  • Pivots: Wear a striped helmet cover and lead the pack, often acting as the last line of defense.

3. The Pack:

  • Made up of blockers from both teams. Referees ensure the pack stays together.

HOW A JAM WORKS

1. Starting a Jam:

  • Each team sends 5 skaters: 1 pivot, 3 blockers, and 1 jammer.
  • At the whistle, all skaters race counterclockwise around the track.

2. Lead Jammer:

  • The first jammer to legally pass through the pack becomes the Lead Jammer and can end the jam early by putting their hands on their hips.
  • If no one gets Lead, the jam lasts 2 minutes.

3. Scoring Points:

  • After the first pass, jammers score 1 point for every opposing skater they legally pass, including players in the penalty box.

Watch the jammers battle for Lead, keep an eye on the blockers in the pack, and enjoy the speed, hits, and strategy!
