Snowy Twist: Rose City Rollers Reschedule Season Opener

The Highly Anticipated 20th Anniversary Season Opener to Kick Off on January 27th

PORTLAND, OREGON, JANUARY 11, 2023 – Portland’s icy forecast throws a curveball at the Rose City Rollers (RCR) Season Opener this weekend. Due to the below-freezing temps, the highly-anticipated 20th Anniversary Season Opener is rescheduled for Saturday, January 27th. With its undeniable historical charm, RCR’s home venue, the Hangar at Oaks Park, has been the heart of Portland roller derby for years. However, its lack of heating makes it a no-go for hosting the rowdy home crowd this weekend. The new Opener date will deliver the same derby action but with a bit more warmth.

This special doubleheader signals the beginning of an extraordinary year-long celebration. It stands as a testament to RCR’s commitment to empowering athletes and fostering an inclusive community over the last 20 years. The unexpected twist in the schedule gives all four Home Teams an extra two weeks to fine-tune their strategies and set the stage for an unforgettable roller derby experience. Tickets are available now, with fan seating so close to the action that you can feel the intensity on the track.

“Until we find a new venue, we’ll channel the adaptability and grit we’ve honed on the track to take these venue challenges in stride.” says RCR Executive Director and Founder Kim “Rocket Mean” Stegeman, “Can’t wait to kick off the 20th-anniversary opener on the 27th and celebrate with all our incredible fans.”

For the past 20 years, the Rose City Rollers have not just been a roller derby league. They’re a beacon of inclusivity, a community that defies stereotypes, and a space where champions emerge, both on and off the track. The Season Opener action begins at 5:30 PM with the Guns N Rollers facing off against the High Rollers, followed by the Break Neck Betties taking on the Heartless Heathers at 8 PM. Roller derby enthusiasts and newcomers alike can witness the skill, strategy, and sheer excitement that have defined the Rose City Rollers’ legacy over the past two decades.
