Adult Intro to Roller Derby (starts Oct. 17)

THIS SERIES IS FULL 🙂 STAY TUNED FOR THE NEXT ONE!

Are you ready to start your roller derby journey with Rose City Rollers?!

Whether you’re brand new to skating or ready to take your skating skills in a new direction, this 4-week series is your chance to learn the basics of roller skating with a roller derby twist. In this “Roller Derby 101” class, you’ll attend four 2-hour practices, once per week, led by RCR coaches and skaters. You’ll learn from the best, meet new friends (& future teammates!), build confidence on skates, learn essential skating skills, and get a taste of what makes roller derby so much fun – all at the headquarters of roller derby here in PDX. Never skated before? No problem. Rental skates and gear are available through our Rent N Roll gear-lending library at no extra cost!

And this is just the beginning. At the end of the series, you’ll have the opportunity to continue your roller derby journey by joining Rose City Rollers as an official league member!

When: Saturdays, 8:00-10:00 am (10/17, 10/24, 10/31, 11/7)

Where: The Hangar at Oaks Park

How much: $150 (Rental skates and gear included!), plus parking ($3-5 per day at Oaks Park).

This program for skaters who are:

  • 18+ years old
  • Able to stand on skates unassisted
  • Get up from a fall without help
  • Skaters who identify with the WFTDA Statement on Gender

You’ll learn essential skating skills like standing and falling safely, stopping, and crossovers. More advanced skaters will also work on backwards skating, lateral movement, and transitions, which means changing from forwards to backwards skating while rolling. These are foundational skating skills, but you’ll learn them through a roller derby lens, with light pack drills mixed in along the way. You don’t need to know how to play roller derby – or have even seen a bout! – before you arrive. That’s what we’re here for!

If you are an experienced skater and already know that you would like to join RCR, contact transfer@rosecityrollers.com rather than signing up for this series.

What you’ll need:

  • Skates, Pads, & Helmet – Don’t have your own? We got you! Our Gear-Lending Library, Rent N Roll, has you covered from head to toe, literally. RCR loaners are included in your reservation for the program – just make sure to fill out your gear section of the registration so we can have your gear ready to go.
  • Mouthguard – Sisu is our preferred brand because it can be remolded to your mouth. RCR offers them for $20 which can be included in your registration
  • Water bottle – hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. We have water on-site but recommend bringing at least a liter of water, and more when you start skating. It gets hot in the Hangar!
  • Snacks – bring a small snack that will help give you energy. Protein bars, fresh fruit or fruit leathers, or granola bars (shout out to Bobs Red Mill!) are all great.
  • Positive Attitude – you don’t have to be an expert-level athlete or even a skilled skater. With the right mindset, a few safety tips, and your RCR teammates behind you, you’ll be well on your way, and we can’t wait to see where your derby journey takes you!

Spots are going fast, sign up today!

We look forward to seeing you on the track!
